The reasons for choosing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are as varied as the students who train with us but there are a number of reasons that make Jiu-Jitsu an obvious choice. Whether it's for self-defence, competition, or fitness you'll discover much, much more!
Jiu-Jitsu is a modern martial arts system that evolved on the streets of Brazil and refined in Mixed Martial Arts competitions the world over. Its techniques are are continuously being developed and improved though real application.
Jiu-Jitsu techniques are grounded in reality so they work. It's also compatible with New Zealand law where we have a legal obligation to avoid excessive force. In fact, we don't even use kicks or strikes. Instead, we use non-lethal joint locks and chokes to quickly end a confrontation.
Jiu-Jitsu follows a simple, proven strategy: defend - control - finish. Every technique we learn fits into this strategy. Our teaching emphasises concepts and problem solving which helps our students to think and adapt to any situation.
Jiu-Jitsu's no-nonsense approach means that students gain a foothold very quickly. Unlike many traditional systems where you need to train for years before you can defend yourself, our students gain usable skills from the first lesson! Even just three months of training can equip a student with significantly improved defensive capability.
Jiu-Jistu has a significant effect on personal development, especially in kids. Self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-discipline all see dramatic improvement. Other less obvious but equally important benefits like situational awareness, problem solving, and goal-setting are also developed.
Jiu-JItsu is particularly good for children and teenagers. In addition to the personal development just mentioned, there's also improved physical coordination and a heightened self-confidence. Part of this comes from learning ways to deal with aggressors. In a playground context that might be as simple as knowing how to get on top and squashing a bully until help arrives.
Jiu-Jitsu's sporting side easily caters for anyone interested in the challenge of competition. Not only are there opportunities to compete in the traditional uniform (gi) but also no-gi and submission-only. And, let's not forget that Jiu-Jitsu remains one of the core disciplines learned by the majority of the world's Mixed Martial Arts champions.
Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art where everyone can succeed. It isn't just for athletes; it isn't just for young people; and it isn't just for men. We have students as young as four all the way through to their 50s! This is a system where you learn to appreciate your strengths. If a technique doesn't work for you we'll show you how to adapt it so that it does!
Jiu-Jitsu brings together a diverse range of people from all walks of life, all sharing a common interest. You'll make new friends and add a new social dimension to your life. Our students get together regularly for social events. If you're lucky enough to travel, chances are there'll be a nearby club you can visit because your new Jiu-Jitsu family is truly global in scope!
